fsf_buildingBLOGFeeding South Florida is the leading domestic hunger relief organization in South Florida. This organization serves Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties through a network of nonprofit partner agencies with the mission to help end hunger in South Florida.

On August 28th, 2014, we were invited to take a tour of the Feeding South Florida headquarters, located in Pembroke Pines, Florida. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Nataly Ramirez, the Development Coordinator.

The tour began in the conference room, where we were able to view numerous plaques celebrating Feeding South Florida in appreciation of all they have done for the local communities. As we traveled from the conference room into the sorting room, our attention was drawn to many portraits lining the hallway. Feeding South Florida’s passion to feed the hungry is shown through the stunning black and white photographs depicting children receiving nourishment.

fsf_volunteerWe then arrived in the sorting room where donated food is thoroughly inspected and organized into different categories depending on the products. This allows the organization to know how many of each product they have available so they can plan according. They understand that providing a variety of foods is essential in serving the local communities with well-thought-out healthy meals.

Our next stop was the packing room. One of several programs explained to us was the “Children’s Backpack Program”, which entails creating a package that consist of two days worth of kid-kitchen friendly food items that fit perfectly in the child’s backpack. The packages are provided to students on Friday afternoons to ensure they have well-balanced meals over the weekend. Programs such as these are one of the many ways Feeding South Florida is able to serve the local communities with nutritious food.

The last stop of the tour was the warehouse, which was packed with boxes of nourishing food ready to be shipped out to local communities including homeless shelters, group homes, pantries, and other nonprofit partner agencies.

As the tour came to an end, we were thoroughly impressed with the professionalism and efficiency of their operation and grateful for the opportunity to help make a difference in our community.
